1D barcode: DataBar Expanded (RSS Expanded)
The "DataBar Expanded" barcode is a versatile and comprehensive symbology used in retail and healthcare to encode a wide range of data.
Its design allows for the encoding of the entire 14-digit Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) along with additional information such as product weight, expiration dates, or serial numbers.
This capability makes it particularly useful for small items where traditional barcodes would not fit.
The DataBar Expanded barcode can be stacked, making it more rectangular and thus adaptable to different product shapes.
It's the only linear 1D barcode approved by GS1 for encoding GTIN-14 numbers in all retail checkout systems, which has been a requirement since 2010.
This barcode type is also used for coupon data, following the standards set by the Joint Industry Coupon Committee.
Its error correction is robust, utilizing a modulus 79 or greater internal check digit, reducing the chance of scan errors compared to UPC and EAN symbols that use a mod 10 check digit.
The DataBar Expanded barcode is an innovation in the barcode industry, enhancing the efficiency of inventory management, traceability, and product recall capabilities.
